Globally around 4.8-billion-hectare land area comes under agriculture. From this agricultural land, on around 83% of the area, rain-fed agriculture is practiced, which means agriculture is dependent on rainfall. For the rest of the 17% area, the irrigation is done using wells, canals, lakes, pumps, ponds, tube wells, etc. However, only 18% of the 4.8-billion-hectare cultivable land is irrigated, the rest of the 82% of land is not irrigated, due to the absence of proper irrigation facilities or irregular rainfall activities.
Thus, it is estimated that in the absence of proper irrigation, the production capacity decreases by almost 31% for crops including cotton, sugarcane, rice, citrus fruits, etc. Further, the production capacity of cereal crops decreases by almost 47%. To provide irrigation facilities on 82% of cultivable unirrigated land, and improve productivity, global organizations such as the World Bank and Food & Agriculture Organizations, are consistently launching projects related to improved farm practices, sustainable irrigation, modernized agriculture, etc. For the irrigation projects, an investment of around USD 7 billion was made by the World Bank in the last two decades which is eventually leading to a rise in the demand for agriculture & irrigation pumps.
