Different Types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) & their Rising Demand amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic
Published Date: 16 Feb 2022

Having the right tools & supplies ensures that one performs their work safely & effectively. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) acts as a shield for the human body that limits the risk of workplace injuries & illnesses, which may arise from contact with chemical, radiological, electrical, mechanical, and other hazards. PPE kits have their requirements across different sectors. However, they are used primarily by healthcare workers to prevent themselves from highly infectious diseases that may occur due to their constant exposure to infected patients.

Since 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there’s been a rapidly surging need for PPE kits worldwide. The current scenario indicates that the Global Healthcare Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Market can register around 7.8% CAGR during 2022-27. The surging incidences of deadly diseases across the globe are leading to the growing awareness about the significance of workplace safety and, in turn, indicating an immense production of PPE kits in the future.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) & Covid-19

Due to the highly contagious coronavirus & its instant transferable nature, the demand for PPE kits among medical professionals, frontline workers, and everyday consumers has increased like a fire in the forest. As a result, there's been a worldwide shortage of PPE kits, and both the WHO & governments of various countries have encouraged manufacturers to increase production. Besides masks, gloves, boots, & goggles that have been used widely amidst the crisis, a few more products became immensely popular in hospitals & other healthcare institutions.

PPE kits have significantly contributed to minimizing the spread of the highly contagious Covid-19. As a result, the rising number of Covid-19 cases & other deadly diseases worldwide and the ever-increasing need to protect healthcare & frontline workers against them

The Seven Elements of PPE Kits

  • Face Shields: When it comes to preventing virus transmission, a face shield is essential since it creates a barrier that reduces exposure & the spread of germs. Since it is made of plastic, it provides good visibility while protecting the face from harmful bacteria & viruses by covering up the size & length of the face.
  • Coverall: Coverall is made of waterproof material that offers full-body coverage by protecting the person against splashes of infectious fluids. It is considerably easier to wear & remove and recommended as a part of contact precautions.
  • Gloves: They prevent the skin from being exposed to chemicals, infectious bacteria, and viruses. They stop germs from spreading between the patient and the caregiver through their skin.
  • Goggles: Viral infections are most likely to enter the body through the mouth or nose, but they can also enter through the eyes, which is why protection is necessary. Goggles protect the mucus membranes in the eyes from bacteria, viruses, & fluids.
  • Head Cover: The use of head covers prevents germs from spreading through contact or droplets. Heads can be the site of transmission of infections. Hence, keeping the hair tucked inside the head covering reduces the transmission of germs.
  • Masks: Using a facemask prevents infections from being spread to & by the wearer and protects the face & hands from large droplets & splashes generated by coughing, sneezing, or touching the face. Three types of masks include surgical, N-95, & cloth-based (made from homemade materials.)
  • Footwear: Safety shoes (also known as safety boots) are personal protective equipment (PPE) meant to protect your feet at work.

Conclusion

PPE protects against the spread of infectious agents by forming a barrier between the possible infectious material and an individual. It is more than tools & appliances that you distribute to your employees or workers but the defensive equipment that keeps them safe from harmful bacteria & viruses. Hence, several organizations of different industry verticals are increasingly utilizing PPE kits in their respective workplaces, which would lead the Global Healthcare Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Market to witness remunerative growth opportunities in the years to come.
